Riding Out the Shutdown Storm: Caring for Your Mental Health
Leah S
If you’ve turned on the news lately, you’ve probably heard more about the government shutdown than you ever wanted. So many people are experiencing stress, uncertainty, and disruption. Because, let’s be real here – the government may have hit the pause button but we aren’t able to hit pause on stress, bills and rising prices!
For federal employees, contractors, and families impacted by paused paychecks or delayed services, the emotional weight can feel overwhelming. Even for those not directly affected, the constant news cycle and unpredictability may stir up feelings of anxiety, frustration, or helplessness. Whew! That sure can feel like one big cloud of stress and anxiety hovering over everyone.
Yes, stress is a normal response when our routines and financial security are flipped upside down, but uncertainty is still hard on the brain. This can often leave us restless, anxious, or just plain exhausted.

There are things we can do to take care of ourselves while everything feels stuck in limbo.
- Check in with yourself. Pause and ask, “How am I actually doing right now?” Giving yourself permission to feel whatever you’re feeling is a form of self-care.
- Put a limit on doom-scrolling. You don’t need to refresh the news every five minutes (I promise, you will know of any updates soon enough).
- Stay connected. Isolation makes stress louder. Call a friend, grab coffee, or talk it out.
- Ground yourself. Deep breaths, a walk outside, or a quick stretch break really can help reset your nervous system.
- Ask for support. Whether that’s therapy, a support group, or other resources, reaching out doesn’t mean you’re weak — it means you’re human.
Shutdowns are stressful, unpredictable, and — let’s be real — not fun. But even in the middle of all this uncertainty, you can still choose to care for yourself, protect your peace, and maybe even find a moment to laugh.
